Chapter 7 * The Foundation Routine – What To Do

Introduction — Entering the Calm

You’ve now explored the Top Hat Technique and seen how a child’s brain naturally moves through different stages, becoming more open during light sleep.[35][36]

This chapter takes the next step: the practical sequence that makes The Goulding System possible each night. It outlines the Foundation Routine — what you do to prepare for the moment before, and during, speaking the words of the Foundation Statement.

Think of this chapter as your step-by-step guide: how to prepare the room, how to enter, where to stand, and how to leave. These simple steps create the calm, steady space in which your child can remain asleep while still responding to gentle cues.[35][36]

In the next chapter, we’ll add the exact words you will speak — the Foundation Statement — which covers your immediate family. Later in the book, you’ll find clear guidance for the family variations you may need.

The Purpose Of The Foundation Routine

The full Foundation Routine has two parts that work together:

  1. What you do
  2. What you say

Step 1 — Lift the Hat

  • bring the child gently into lighter sleep
  • recognise the right moment

Step 2 — Deliver the Foundation Affirmations

  • the Foundation Statement

Step 3 — Return the Hat

As well as what to say or do if the child stirs or wakes.

This chapter, Chapter 7, covers Step One — What You Do.

Summary — The Quiet Preparation

The Foundation Routine is your gentle nightly pathway into your child’s receptive, peaceful state.

By preparing the room with softness, entering calmly, and using simple, loving touch, you create a steady moment of safety and connection.

Affectionate caregiver touch is strongly associated with soothing and regulation in early development (with most evidence focused on infants and early childhood).[39]

You are loved, you are lovable, and I am here.

As your child settles into lighter sleep, your presence becomes quieter, and your voice becomes the bridge.

It is not the words alone that matter — it is how they are given.

Your tone, your rhythm, your calm emotional presence all shape how your child receives what you say.

In the next chapter, we move from what you do, to how you speak.
